Again, a huge thank you goes out to Kristen Alix, Meaghan Shaughnessy, Tracy McMahon, Jane Hartgrove, Julie Berk and Melissa Leffingwell for the hard work they all did to coordinate the Wine Tasting event last Saturday. They did an amazing job, and lucky for all of us, Kristen has said it was so much fun that she’ll be willing to do it all again next year! With her commitment and the leadership of a new Art/Science Steering Committee, the program will continue to thrive and grow.
As always, thanks for doing what you can!

Current Volunteer Needs:
Green Committee: The Green Committee is looking for a few sustainably minded folks to get involved with the many exciting programs that they have already developed as well as to help implement more programs to make our school community as sustainable and healthy as it can be. This committee not only worked to secure and install the school garden which has become an integral part of many electives classes and classroom projects, but also brought composting to our cafeteria and recently raised funds thru the Little Red School House and the textile recycling program to purchase silverware for the cafeteria. No more plastic forks and spoons going to the landfill! If you would like to be part of this important group, please plan to attend the next meeting on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. For more information, please contact Steph Friday at stephfriday@mac.com or Leslie Demmon at leslie@demmonstudios.net
Book Fair Coordinator Needed: Thank you to Rebecca Smith for stepping up to help Gail Axt with the annual Book Fair May 8-10. It would be great to have one more person to help pull off another great fair and earn lots of books for our library. Please contact me if you can assist Gail with this exciting event. (The kids love the book fair!)
Coordinator(s) Needed for Gala, May 10: A coordinator or co-coordinators are really, really needed to organize the annual Gala which is scheduled for Thursday, May 10. This school-wide community event is a wonderful showcase of so many of the children’s talents and is a fantastic way to celebrate and close out the school year. Our wonderful 3rd grade parents are on tap to staff this event so good help will be plentiful. However, a leader is needed to get the event off the ground. That person does not necessarily need to be a 3rd grade parent. If you can step up to coordinate this event, please contact me, and I will put you in touch with the person who coordinated the event last year.

Raise Money for Polaris Through Door to Door Organics Door to Door Organics provides year-round delivery of great quality, organic fruits and vegetables as well as eggs. You can choose a box of produce ranging from $25 to $60 per box and have it delivered weekly or bi-weekly. It is easy to manage your account online, and you can even easily substitute items in your box if there are items you know you will not use. Better yet, Door to Door Organics provides easy fundraising for our school when four or more families join together to form a “fundraising co-op” using a common delivery location.
We already have one active co-op in the Stapleton neighborhood. If you’d like to join this co-op, led by Alicia Rigsby, please contact her at rigsbyalicia@comcast.net
Paul and Molly Kirshling in the 80205 zip code have also stepped up to be co-op leaders. If you’d like to be part of their co-op, please contact them at paulnmolly@gmail.com
Here is a link to Door to Door Organics so you can check it out yourself.
We probably have enough families in the 80207 (Park Hill) neighborhood to form a co-op there. If you are interested in being a co-op leader for this area, please contact me. The leader is responsible for ensuring that there are at least four members by asking friends or neighbors to join and for providing a drop-off location. Leaders do not need to be present for deliveries, and all boxes are labeled (no sorting necessary). The delivery location is ideally out of the sun, not visible from the street and easy for the co-op members to access.
Please contact me, Tammy Chamberlain, at tammychamberlain@hotmail.com if you are interested in being a co-op leader or joining a co-op. Like our successful grocery card program, this is easy, passive fundraising since the product is something a lot of us already buy.
Girl Scout Troop#3573 is collecting new or gently used stuffed animals for the non-profit organization Loving Hugs, Inc. Loving Hugs collects stuffed animals and gives them to children who are displaced and often separated from their families and homes. We would love it if you could help us!
The requirements are:
Drop off donations from March 19-23 in the boxes outside the cafeteria. Thank you for your support and stuffed animals!
A Mile-High Mile with a Mile-High Finish Imagine this: Your legs are tired, you’ve run three-quarters of a mile and are ready to enter the final stretch of the race. What better way to push yourself to the finish line than by emerging from the players’ tunnel into a 76,125-person-capacity stadium with your family and friends cheering you on? That’s right, the Live-Life-Smiling Mile High Mile will be held once again at one of Denver’s most iconic locations: Sports Authority Field at Mile High stadium.
So get ready to lace up your running shoes for Denver’s premier one-mile road race, the Live-Life-Smiling Mile High Mile, on April 22nd. The race is a great way to start a weekend morning, spend time with family, and have lots of fun! This race is also a critical fundraiser for The Greenway Foundation’s SPREE Program and the field trips you love! Polaris’ support of this race helps us provide those field trips for a fraction of the actual cost!
Sign up online at www.milehighmile.com and don’t forget to select Polaris so that $5 of your registration will be credited toward the school’s SPREE field trips. SPREE will also soon come into the school to present the race to the students. Watch last year’s Mile High Mile video here: MHM 2011 Video
Race Costs: Early Bird Registration (register before April 6th) – $27 Adult, $22 Child
Please STOP for school buses when they have their red lights flashing and stop signs out. All traffic in BOTH directions is required by law to stop. Many of our children ride buses to Polaris, and I personally have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of drivers who ignore this law and zoom past the buses while our children are loading or unloading. This is dangerous and illegal. While I don’t believe Polaris parents are the culprits, I just want to remind everyone to pay attention to the school buses and stop when required by law. Thank you. Alenka Han, PTO President.
Urban Gardening Tips on the Haus The GrowHaus, an interactive urban farm and marketplace located at 4751 York Street, is hosting its 2nd annual Seed Swap and Garden Teach-In on Saturday, March 10 from 1-4 p.m. The event will feature healthy food, tours of the indoor garden, live music, workshops with some of Denver’s top urban farmers and activities for adults and children. There is a suggested donation of $7, but entry is free if you bring seeds to trade. For more information, please go to http://growhaus.org/ or contact our chief Polaris gardener, Leslie Demmon, at leslie@demmonstudios.net
The Little Red Schoolhouse will remain in the staff parking lot. Please continue to recycle there and tell your friends about it. Clean items in any condition (including stained and torn) are accepted. Click here for a complete list of acceptable items. Proceeds from the donations will help fund future Polaris sustainability projects through grants funded by Red Apple Recycling.
The March orders have been delivered and are waiting in the office for pick-up. Please stop in with a check made out to Polaris PTO to pick yours up today. Last day to pick up March orders will be Monday, April 2 and new April orders will be delivered Tuesday, April 3.
Lost and Found – Please Check Before Spring Break Please stop by the Lost and Found area and check for your child’s missing items. There are many lunch boxes and jackets. Any unclaimed items will be donated to Little Red Schoolhouse during Spring Break.
