Crow Canyon Trip
The Crow Canyon trip happens in the Spring of each year. This page will be updated in the Spring of the 2008-2009 school year. In the meantime, if you are curious what it's all about, here is a link to the site and last years notes.
Dear Fourth Grade Parents:
The 4th grade has had a tradition, ever since the school was started seven years ago, of taking a five-day, four night trip to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. This year the 4th graders will be going from April 2nd through 6th. The first and last days are spent traveling to Crow Canyon, which is located near Cortez and Mesa Verde, Colorado. During the three days the kids are there, the Crow Canyon staff leads the kids in field work and other educational activities, including a visit to Mesa Verde. They will lodge in a dormitory setting with 8 to a room and eat their meals at a cafeteria. During the day they will attend classes and in the evenings they will participate in special programs. Each child is provided with a disposable camera and field journal. At the end of the trip, they will each have a written record of their trip (the field journal) and a photo essay. The program is high quality and keeps us coming back, year after year!
For some kids, this may be their first experience away from home for four nights. But what a great situation to start out with! They are with their teachers and classmates, whom they know very well. It’s a very safe way to venture out. They grow in their knowledge of archaeology, but they also mature as people on this trip.
The projected cost for each child to attend is approximately $465. This covers transportation between Ebert and Crow Canyon, lodging, food, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center educational fees, a disposable camera, a notebook and $20 spending money for each child. You can pay for this all at once (on or before November 21st) or in installments ($100 by October 20th; November 21st; December 21st; and January 19th and $65 by February 9th). If your child is on the free or reduced lunch program, there are scholarships that will be provided through the PTO and donations. We are committed to each and every child taking advantage of this great opportunity. If even one classmate isn’t able to go, the class would miss the contribution that child would make by being there.
Unlike past years, the 4th grade parents and children are not solely responsible for raising the scholarship funds for the Crow Canyon trip through a jog-a-thon and an auction. As many of you know, fundraising events (like the jog-a-thon) for special programs, such as Crow Canyon, has been consolidated under the PTO. But we still need to help. Jane Zavislan, a 4th grade mother has taken on organizing the jog-a-thon for the PTO. PLEASE sign up to help her with this event (zavisland@aol.com or (303)322-1325).
Please review and complete the attached Crow Canyon Information Form and return it to your classroom teacher by October 20th. If you are choosing the installment plan for payment, please attach to the form a check for $100 made payable to Polaris PTO. If you are requesting a partial or full scholarship, please show a copy of your eligibility letter to Dr. Diana Howard or any of the staff in the front office on or before October 20th. We really need to know how many people are requesting full or partial scholarships as soon as possible so we can plan our scholarship request and budget. Thank you in advance for helping us to plan effectively!
This is an incredible trip – if you want to learn more information about Crow Canyon, go to their website at www.crowcanyon.org and look under “Schools & Educators.”
