Serving our community—both the Polaris community and that of the world outside our walls—is an important value at our school. We believe school-wide service projects and social-emotional education encourage our students to see others’ challenges as opportunities to show compassion and make a difference. Here are details on community service and social-emotional education at Polaris.
In October 2016, Polaris kicked off a school-wide social emotional program called Random Acts of Kindness (RAK). RAK is an organization that believes spreading kindness will make the world a significantly better place.
We believe RAK helps our students increase their social-emotional intelligence by helping them be accountable for what they say and think as well as working to make the world a better place. It is wonderful to watch the kindness spread in our school, community and homes. Check out the student made video about RAK below.
We are a Love and Logic School. We believe that students learn best in an atmosphere of mutual respect where they are able to make choices about their behavior while learning what it means to be a community and how keep in mind the needs of others. As part of Love and Logic, our staff developed a school-wide code of ethics:
- We believe that every attempt should be made to maintain the dignity of both adults and the students.
- We believe that students should be guided and expected to solve the problems without making problems for anyone else.
- We believe that misbehavior should be handled with natural consequences connected to the behavior instead of punishment whenever possible.
- We believe that each person should have the opportunity to give his or her perspective of situations when conflict arises.
2016-17 Community Service Projects
2017 “Green” Community Service Project
In Spring 2017, students are participating in the “Green” community service project benefitting Denver Kids [link to http://denverkidsinc.org/]. We provided a gently used bag of books and a stuffed animal for summer reading to all 125 students served by Denver Kids in DPS elementary schools.
Holiday Party Projects: As part of our holiday parties, each classroom collected donations or made useful items to donate to causes that help others in our community.
Past Community Service Projects
Holiday Giving Project 2016
The 2016 Holiday Giving Project, which benefitted The Gathering Place, was a huge success! Our community donated 1000+ toiletries for Betsy’s Cupboard, 30 handmade fleece blankets for children and generated over $400 in greeting card sales that go directly to homeless women. See the time-lapse video below of students sorting donated toiletries before delivering them.
2016 “Green” Community Service Project
Our students donated their gently used clothing to Clothes to Kids Denver. Classroom boxes were overflowing and Student Council sorted and delivered 40 boxes and bags of clothing to CTKD to be used by other children in Denver.
2015 Holiday Giving Project
The 2015 Holiday Giving Project benefitted Project Angel Heart. Project Angel Heart delivers meals to people in our community who are facing life threatening illnesses. Our school collected boxes of cereal and other dry goods (beans, granola bars, nuts) that they use to prepare meals for their clients.
